Zune 30GB Instructions

by Daniel Barrows

The Zune is a digital media player produced by Microsoft that comes in a variety of storage capacities, including one model equipped with a 30GB hard drive. These devices feature a three-inch LCD display, a USB 2.0 port, an estimated battery life of 14 hours, and the ability to play MP3, WMA and AAC files. The Zune is designed to interface with your home computer with the assistance of special software; this allows you to transfer media files to your device for later playback.

Step 1

Log into your computer and insert the installation CD that came packaged with your computer. Launch the installer application and follow the onscreen instructions; if you no longer have the installation CD, download an installer from zune.com (see Resources).

Step 2

Connect one end of the Zune's sync cable to the corresponding port on the bottom edge of the device. Plug the remaining end of the cable into any USB port on your computer. Launch the Zune application and select the option labeled "Collection."

Step 3

Review the list of media files stored on your computer. Select the desired files and drag them over to the icon labeled "Device." Wait for the transfer process to complete, then disconnect the device from the sync cable.

Step 4

Plug your headphones into the corresponding jack on the device. Hold down the "Play" button, located under the bottom-right corner of the display, until the device turns on. Press the center of the Zune pad, located directly underneath the display.

Step 5

Slide your fingertip up and down on the Zune pad to navigate through the options on the display. Select the type of media file you wish to play or view on the device. Press the center of the Zune pad to confirm your selection. Select the desired file in a similar manner. Use the "Back" button, located under the lower-left corner of the display, if you need to return to a previous menu.

Step 6

Press the "Play" button to play or pause the currently selected media file. Press the upper or lower end of the Zune pad to increase or decrease the playback volume as desired. Hold down the "Back" button if you wish to return to the device's "Home" screen. Navigate to the option labeled "Settings" and adjust the shuffle and repeat settings, if desired.

Tip

  • Tilting the Zune on its side will set the display to landscape mode.
  • The Zune requires approximately three hours of charging to recharge a fully drained battery.
