Verizon Wireless is a leading phone company that offers service based in the United States. The company's phones have the ability to call and text worldwide. The plan you have dictates how much you can text for the price you pay. Consult your phone bill or the company's online usage summary to determine your text plans and limits.

Individual and Family Plans

Individual plans are designed for single people not wanting to sign onto a family plan. If two or more people would like to share a phone plan, they should purchase a family plan. Texting is an add on that is not included in either plan's original price. With Verizon, you can buy a "Text Bundle." Three options are available, all of which include text, picture, video and voice messages. As of the time of publication, the cheapest option is $5 per month per line, which includes 250 of the aforementioned types of messaging. The second bundle, $10 per month per line, includes 500 texts for non-Verizon contacts in addition to unlimited mobile to mobile between Verizon customers. The final bundle is $20 per month per line and includes the unlimited messaging with 5,000 texts for non-Verizon contacts.

Pay Per Use

Pay per use texting is for people that do not use text messaging as one of their main avenues of communication. You pay only for the texts that you send. As of the time of publication, the rate for texts sent or received is 20 cents each, and includes texts to Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. For picture, video and voice messages, the cost is 25 cents per message sent or received. These prices only apply to individual and family plans.

Prepaid Phones

Prepaid phones are ideal for those that do not want to commit to a two-year contract with a standard cell phone. You simply pay month-to-month for the services you want to receive. All messaging is unlimited with the "Talk & Text" plans. As of the time of publication, Verizon offers prepaid phone plans starting at $64.99 with 450 talk minutes. The next level is $84.99, coming with 900 talk minutes. If you would like to talk and text without restraint, the plan is $94.99. All plans include unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling and unlimited night and weekend minutes.

Nationwide Messaging Plans

Verizon offers plans that do not include any voice minutes, just unlimited text, picture and video messaging. These plans are ideal for the deaf and hard of hearing. For feature phones that do not use the data network or only surf web 2.0, access to the messaging-only plan is $34.99 a month. The voice per minute rate is 40 cents. For 3G smartphones, the messaging-only plan is $54.99 a month. This includes unlimited web browsing and data usage. The voice per minute rate is 25 cents.
