Your Samsung Mesmerize ships with the Android 2.1 operating system, which offers plenty of built-in features but is dated considering Google's updates since then. Fortunately you can upgrade your phone to Android 2.3.4, which updates many elements both practical and cosmetic. Unfortunately, this update does delete all user data, so you should back up all important information before updating.
Computer Setup
Step 1
Download the Samsung Upgrade Tool (see the link in Resources) to your computer, which is required for to update your phone. Double-click the Samsung Upgrade Tool file you just downloaded to install it. You can use the default settings for this installation.
Step 2
Open the Samsung Simple Upgrade program on your computer. By default a shortcut for this is created on your desktop that you can double-click, but you can also find it by clicking the Start button and typing "Samsung Simple Upgrade" into the search text box.
Step 3
Click "Next."
Step 4
Click "I accept the terms in the license agreement" and then click "Next," then "Next" again.

Step 4

Step 6

Step 7
Click "OK" on your computer when a prompt appears informing you that the update is complete. The phone will restart.
Step 8
Remove the USB cord from your phone.
Tip
- You can automatically back up data associated with your Google account, such as Gmail messages, Gmail contacts and Google Calendar. This option is available by pressing the "Menu" button at the Home screen and tapping "Settings," then "Accounts & Sync," then "Data & synchronization" and finally the check boxes beside the data you want to back up. You can force a synchronization at this screen by pressing the Menu button and tapping "Sync now."
- You can also back up your phone contacts to your SD card. You do this by viewing your contacts and pressing the Menu button, then tapping "Import/Export," then "Export to SD card" and finally "OK."
- After installing the update, you will need to work through the initial setup on your phone just like you did when you turned it on for the first time. This includes logging into your Google account.
