How to Update an iPod's Genius

by Phil Hoops

The Apple iPod music player offers the ability to play back personalized selections of music called Genius playlists. The iTunes Genius technology tracks what songs you listen to and generates a playlist with songs from similar artists. Updating your iPod's Genius playlist is simple and will enable you to continually hear a fresh mix of music. It also may help you discover music you otherwise may not have heard before.

Step 1

Open your computer's Web browser and download the latest version of the Apple iTunes music management software. Double-click on the installation file to begin the installation of iTunes. Click "Yes," if prompted, to restart your computer and complete the installation. Wait as the software launches automatically.

Step 2

In iTunes, click on the "Store" tab at the top-right portion of the screen to open the drop-down menu. Click on the "Update Genius" button and wait as the software automatically creates a customized Genius playlist.

Step 3

Insert one end of the dock connector cable, which came bundled with your iPod, into the bottom of the device. Plug the other end of the cable into an available USB port on your computer. Click on the name of your iPod underneath the "Devices" heading on the left-side of the screen. Click the "Sync" button at the bottom of the screen to synchronize, including your iPod's Genius playlist. Disconnect your iPod from the computer when the synchronization completes. Now you can listen to your new mix of tunes.
