With the Handbrake application, which is available as a free download for both Mac and PC computers, you can rip DVD movies to your hard drive. Once you have successfully ripped a DVD movie, it can be transferred to iTunes and converted to a format that is playable on the iPod Classic, Touch and Nano. Remember that it is illegal to rip DVD movies that you do not already own.

Step 1

Go to the Handbrake download page and download the latest version of the Handbrake application. See Resources below.

Step 2

Install and run the Handbrake application on your Mac or PC computer. A pop-up window will appear asking you to select a video source.

Step 3

Insert the DVD movie you want to rip into your computer's disc drive.

Step 4

Select the DVD movie as the video source and then press the "Open" button.

Step 5

Click on the "Browse" button, choose where to save the ripped movie file and give the file a name.

Step 6

Press the "Start" button at the top of the window to begin transferring the DVD movie to your computer's hard drive. Depending on the length of the movie, the process can take up to two hours to complete.

Step 7

Open iTunes and import the converted DVD movie file, which will be in the MP4 format.

Step 8

Connect your iPod to your Mac or PC computer to sync the device and transfer the movie file.
