What Is the Best Tivo HD DVR?

by Alexis Rohlin

TiVo is a digital video recorder that can be programmed to schedule an entire season of a TV series or to record a single episode of your favorite shows. TiVo HD DVRs can be used with cable and satellite TV. TiVo currently offers two different HD DVRs, the TiVo Premiere and the TiVo Premiere XL.

HD DVR

The TiVo HD DVR can be used as a universal cable box and will work with any cable TV provider in the United States. You can record, rewind, fast-forward, and pause your TiVo DVR, just like when you are watching a BluRay or DVD. TiVo HD can record two HD programs simultaneously, while you are watching a third. You can program your TiVo HD DVR to record shows from the Internet; and it can record up to 20 hours HD or 180 hours standard definition TV.

TiVo Premiere DVR

The TiVo Premiere DVR has a new user-friendly HD interface and Discovery Bar. The new Discovery Bar displays better program recommendations, based on what you like to watch with a live video window allows you to watch TV while navigating the menus. It can connect directly to your cable input -- using a coaxial cable and a cable smartcard from your service provider -- to replace your set-top cable box.

With a TiVo Premiere DVR you can watch programming from Netflix, Amazon and Hulu Plus. You can even schedule a recording from the Internet or your mobile phone, if you have a broadband Internet connection.

TiVo Premiere XL

The TiVo Premier XL has all of the features of the TiVo Premiere. In addition, the XL has a larger memory; it can record up to 150 hours of HD programming, and it is THX Certified with premium audio and video fidelity. The XL comes with the TiVo Glo Back-lit remote control with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for quick text entry, when you are searching for programs.

The Difference

TiVo Premiere has a lower cost at $99.99 plus service fees and a lower amount of recording space. The TiVo Premiere DVR can record up to 45 hours of HD programming. TiVo Premiere XL costs $299.99 plus services fees and has 150 hours of recording space, higher quality THX audio and video than TiVo Premiere and a back-lit remote control with slide-out keyboard.
