How to Set Up a Remote to Work With a Direct TV DVR

by Contributing Writer

When DirecTV installs your new DVR, the company also give you a remote control to use with this DVR. The remote control is specifically designed to be used with your DVR. Before the installer leaves, he should have programmed this remote to work with your DVR. If the remote does not yet work with the DVR, you can program it yourself. Doing so requires only a few minutes of effort.

Step 1

Locate the make and model of your DirecTV DVR receiver. This information is located on the back or bottom of the DVR.

Step 2

Locate the five-digit code for your DVR receiver on page 14 of the DirecTV setup manual.

Step 3

Press the "Power" button to turn on the DVR.

Step 4

Slide the "Mode" switch on the remote control to "DirecTV."

Step 5

Press and hold the "Mute" and "Select" buttons until the "DirecTV" button light flashes twice. Release both keys.

Step 6

Enter the five-digit code. If the code is entered correctly, the green light under DirecTV on the remote will flash two times.

Step 7

Aim your remote at the DVR and press the "PWR" button one time. This should turn off the DVR. Press "PWR" again to turn the DVR back on. If this does not work, repeat steps 1-6.
