Text messages are a convenient way to keep in contact with friends, family and business associates when you are unable to communicate verbally. Most mobile phones on the market are capable of sending and receiving text messages. Yahoo! Messenger users can send a free text message to any cell phone in 10 countries, including the United States and Canada. The text messages are delivered within seconds of being sent, and the messages must be limited to 145 characters.

Step 1

Install Yahoo! Messenger on your computer. The software is available to download for free from the Yahoo! website. You will be guided through installation by a series of prompts.

Step 2

Log in to Yahoo! Messenger using your Yahoo! ID and password. If you do not have an account, click the "Sign Up Now" button and create an account.

Step 3

Click "Actions" and select "Send SMS Message" from the drop-down list.

Step 4

Click the "Other Contact" tab and enter the phone number to which you are texting. Click "OK."

Step 5

Enter the message in the messaging window. Click "Send."
