A computer virus is a small computer program that has the ability to spread from one computer to another. Computer viruses are generally designed to complete some malicious act. For example, a computer virus might slow your computer, delete your files, disable your disk drives or restart your computer. In addition, many computer viruses generate pop-ups. Sometimes these pop-ups are advertisements and other times they are fictitious virus warnings designed to trick you into purchasing software.
Click on the "Start" menu and then click on "All Programs."
Click on "Windows Update."
Click on "Check for Updates" and then click on "Install Updates." This will install the latest Windows security updates. Windows security updates will help protect you from known computer viruses. In addition, Windows security updates may help fix problems caused by viruses.
Run Your Antivirus Program
Open your antivirus program. If you do not have an antivirus program, consider downloading a free antivirus program, such as Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool or AVG. Note that Windows also has an antivirus program called Windows Defender. The difference between Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and Windows Defender is that Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool detects and removes existing viruses, whereas Windows Defender works to prevent viruses from infecting your computer.
Update your antivirus program. Most antivirus programs include an "Update" or "Check for Updates" button. If you do not know how to update your antivirus program, consult the manufacturer's homepage.
Run a full scan of your computer using your antivirus program. Running a full scan with an up-to-date antivirus program should detect and remove the viruses. If it does not, continue to the next section.
Back up your computer. Manually removing a virus generally involves deleting files and editing the registry. Thus, it is important to back up your computer before continuing.
Type the name of the virus that has infected your computer into the FasterPCCleanClean or 2-Spyware search box.
Follow the steps set forth by FasterPCCleanClean or 2-Spyware to manually remove the virus.
