It's frustrating to know that if you lose or damage a key on your Acer notebook keyboard, Acer won't provide parts to be replaced by the customer. The company requires you to have the keyboard repaired or replaced by a specialist. Nevertheless, if you're comfortable replacing the keys yourself, you can order keys from several companies online. Most will provide you with the key, hinge and cup needed to replace the key on your specific Acer model.
Step 1
Research different companies to discover if any of them have the replacement parts you need. Here are several options:
Replacement Laptop Keys.com carries replacement keys for Aspire, Extensa and TravelMate models. As of February 2010, prices are $4.95 per key before shipping costs (see Resources).
Laptop-Keys.com also carries replacement keys for Aspire, Estensa and Travelmate models. As of February 2010, prices are $4.79 per key before shipping costs. At certain times, this company offers specials such as free shipping with orders over a certain amount. If you order a replacement key, you'll receive a complimentary instruction video with the order (see Resources).
LaptopKey.com carries replacement keys for Aspire, Extensa, Ferrari, ONE Netbook and TravelMate models. As of February 2011, replacement parts are $4.99 per key before shipping. Each order comes with a complimentary instructional video. Shipping is worldwide (see Resources).
Step 2
Choose a company based on what you need and want. You may have a rarer model, such as the Ferrari, for which parts are not easy to find. Or you may want detailed installation instructions, shipping specials or the best price.
Step 3
Order the necessary parts from your selected merchant. Be sure that you select the keys that fit your exact laptop model in a matching color.
Tip
- There are more companies online that carry Acer keyboard replacement keys than those listed here.
Warning
- When replacing the keys yourself, you run the risk of damaging your keyboard further. The safest option for keyboard repair is to contact Acer support (see Resources).
