New computers usually have some type of antivirus software like Norton pre-installed by the manufacturer. It can be difficult to remove all the components of this program, and it can be running on your computer without your knowledge. This can cause problems with your computer and interfere with some applications you use on a regular basis.
Remove Norton Products Using the Control Panel
Step 1
Left-click the "Start" button in the lower left corner of your screen in Windows.
Step 2
Left-click "Control Panel" from the pop-up menu. The Control Panel window will appear.
Step 3
Double-click "Programs and Features." The "Uninstall or change a program" window appears.
Step 4
Left-click the Norton program from the list to select it. The selected program is highlighted.
Step 5
Left-click "Uninstall/Change" at the top of the window. Windows will remove the program.
Step 6
Reboot your computer to ensure the Norton product is removed from your system.
Remove Norton Automatically
Step 1
Go to Symantec.com and download the Norton removal tool to your desktop.
Step 2
Close any and all Norton software you have running on your computer.
Step 3
Right-click the Norton removal tool and select "Run As Administrator." The removal tool will begin to run.
Step 4
When the removal tool displays the prompt, restart your computer. The Norton products will be removed from your computer

- The Norton Removal Tool works with all Norton 2003 and later products, Norton 360, and Norton SystemWorks 12.0.
- If you use ACT! or WinFAX, pay attention to the special instructions for those programs.
