The RCA DRC277A is a small DVD player designed for use with home entertainment systems. While it lacks a display, support for high-definition Blu-ray discs or the ability to load more than one DVD at a time, it is, otherwise, a full-fledged DVD player. It can handle a number of different DVD formats and can up-convert standard definition DVDs so that they better match high-definition television sets.

Dimensions and Weight

RCA's DRC277A is a compact unit. It measures approximately 11 inches wide, 1.8 inches tall and 8.7 inches deep. It weighs approximately 1.9 pounds. These dimensions and weights do not include the accessories that RCA includes in the box -- a remote control, two AA batteries and an analog audio/video cable.

Supported Disc Formats

Like all DVD players, the DRC277A can handle store-bought DVD discs. It can also play back burned write-once DVDs, rewritable discs and even double layer discs. The player supports both "+" and "-" format discs. It can also handle prerecorded CD discs as well as burned discs in both CD-R and CD-RW format. Finally, the DRC277A can also handle discs containing images in JPEG or HD JPEG formats.

Outputs

The player offers both analog and digital outputs. It has a High Definition Multimedia Interface that carries both digital video and audio as well as an analog composite video output. RCA includes three audio outputs -- a coaxial digital audio jack, an optical digital audio output and a traditional two-channel dual-phono jack analog output.

Output Formats

Designed for the U.S. market, the DRC277A supports the NTSC video format. Its progressive scan video processor displays DVDs at their native 480p resolution, although it can also up-convert them to 720p, 1080i or 1080p high-definition resolutions over its HDMI port. It also passes a DVD's AC-3 Dolby Digital audio signal over its digital outputs, letting you use it with a surround sound system.
