How to Put Two People in the Same Chat Box on Facebook

by Marie Cartwright

If you've used instant messaging clients in the past, you may be wondering how to enable similar chat room options within Facebook Chat. In order to chat with two or more people within the same window, Facebook requires you to take the extra step of creating a "Group." A Group is a way to organize your various social circles, be they your work mates, family members or close friends. Before you can get everybody chatting together, you will need to create a Group.

Step 1

Click on the "Create Group" link in the left sidebar. Type in a name for the group. Begin typing your friends' names within the "Members" field. As you type, a drop-down menu will appear with your friends' completed names. Click on a name to select it.

Step 2

Select your privacy settings. Your group can either be Secret (private content and members), Closed (public members but private content), or Open (everything is public). Click "Create" once you are done. Your new group will appear in the left sidebar.

Step 3

Select your group from the left sidebar to open the group page. Click the "Edit Settings" button in the top right corner. Make sure that the "Send me group chat messages" box is checked. Click "Save Settings."

Step 4

Click on the "Chat With Group" link in the right sidebar, right below the "Members" section. A group chat window will appear at the bottom of your screen. This chat window will appear to all members of the group who are currently online.

If you do not see the "Chat with group" link, you will instead see a "Go online to chat" link. This means that you currently have Facebook chat disabled. Click this link to go online. The link will then change to "Chat with group."
