The digital era has ushered in a new way of listening to music, and the undisputed king of personal audio devices is Apple's iPod. Where you once saw someone listening to a cassette in a Walkman or a CD in a Discman, you now see people listening to iPods. However, just because music is now digital does not mean that you must throw away your old compact discs and repurchase music. Instead, you can convert your CDs to digital music to put on your iPod.
Transfer Music From a CD to an Apple IPod
Step 1
Download the current iTunes application and install it on to your personal computer. If you have a Macintosh, it is already installed on your computer. The iPod requires you to use iTunes to transfer music onto your iPod.
Step 2
Place the CD that contains the music that you wish to listen to on your iPod into the CD-ROM drive of your computer.
Step 3
Open the iTunes program if it did not open automatically when you placed the CD in your computer's CD-ROM drive. The iTunes program will recognize that a CD is in your computer's CD-ROM drive and it will prompt a dialogue box to appear on your screen.
Step 4
Click "Yes" on the dialogue box that appeared asking you if you would like to import the CD into your iTunes library. iTunes will then begin importing the songs onto your computer by converting them to digital music files. Green check marks will appear next to the song titles when the songs have been imported.
Step 5
Connect your iPod to your computer by attaching it to the USB cable or docking station that came with your iPod. If this is the first time you have connected your iPod to the computer, then iTunes will prompt you to set-up and register your device.
Step 6
Click on the music files that you wish to add to your iPod to highlight them. Multiple files may be highlighted by pressing the "Control" key on your keyboard as you click additional files.
Step 7
Drag the highlighted music files to the iPod icon located on the left part of your iTunes window under the "Devices" heading. This will transfer the songs onto your iPod. Repeat this process as necessary in order to put as many songs on your iPod as you would like.
Step 8
Click the eject button next to your iPod icon in the iTunes program and disconnect your iPod from your computer.
