How to Put a Password on a Linksys Wireless G

by KR Knowlin

Setting a password for your Linksys Wireless-G router will keep your wireless network secure. If you setup your Linksys router without designating a password, anyone outside your home or business can access the Internet whenever they want. Leaving your network unprotected also grants unauthorized users access to the computers on your network. It takes little time to put a password on the Linksys Wireless-G router and thus avoid unnecessary risks associated with an unsecured network.

Step 1

Open your Web browser and type "192.168.15.1" into the address bar. Press "Enter" to navigate to the Linksys router homepage. A login prompt will appear. By default, the user name and password for the router are both "admin."

Step 2

Click the "OK" button to log into the router page.

Step 3

Click the "Wireless" tab at the top of the window.

Step 4

Click the arrow to access the drop-down menu of the "Security Mode" field. Select the security mode you want from the list. Consult your router's "Installation and Troubleshooting Guide" if you need help determining the best security mode for your particular network.

Step 5

Enter the password you want to use into the "Passphrase" field.

Step 6

Click the "Save Settings" button to apply the changes. To log out of the router, click the "Log Out" link.
