The iPod began storing video files in 2005 and selling movies through the iTunes store in 2006. You can transfer movies from an iPod to a new computer by using iPod backup software. These programs are available for both Windows and Mac and allow users to transfer all files from an iPod to a device or to any hard drive on a computer. Some of the most popular programs include CopyTrans, TransferPod and iCopyBot. All of these applications can be purchased and downloaded online. You can transfer movies by connecting the iPod to a computer via USB cable, selecting the video files you wish to transfer, and selecting a destination folder for the movies.

Step 1

Start the iPod backup program on your computer. Wait while the program loads.

Step 2

Insert the USB data cable into the bottom dock of your iPod. Insert the other end of the cable into an open USB slot in your computer.

Step 3

Select the "manual" mode inside the program menu. This setting allows you to choose individual files you wish to transfer to your computer. Check your program's user guide for the exact location of the manual setting. Click the "Movies" tab underneath your iPod's digital icon. Select which movies you want to copy to the computer.

Step 4

Look for the "Destination Folder" section of the window. Click the "Browse" button and then navigate the browser to select the folder where you want to save the movie files. Click the "Copy" or "Backup" button to start the transfer process. Check your software's user guide for the exact name of the button. The backup process could take minutes or hours to complete depending upon how much data you will be moving.
