Verizon’s prepaid phone plans are an alternative to the traditional contract plan. Although long-term contracts with Verizon can offer additional services and cheaper monthly rates, a prepaid plan doesn’t lock customers in should they want to change services. Smartphones, feature phones and BlackBerry models are all available with Verizon’s prepaid phone plans.
Prepaid Phone Accounts
A prepaid phone account with Verizon wireless allows customers to use Verizon’s coverage network without having a long-term contract commitment. Customers pay a monthly charge for access to the network and a set amount of minutes. Minutes can be added to accounts by paying for refills at various prices, depending on the number of minutes added. Prepaid phone accounts expire monthly unless refills are added. Once expired, customers may be charged an activation fee.
Smartphones
Smartphones are available with Verizon’s prepaid plans, just like they are with the contract plans. Smartphones allow for customization and application downloads like ringtone makers, games and social networking. However, using many additional features requires a data plan at an additional monthly cost. Android models such as the Droid X, which has an 8.0 megapixel camera; and Samsung Fascinate, which comes with Skype Mobile, can be used with the prepaid plans.
Feature Phones
Verizon’s feature phones offer standard phone call features plus other media capabilities. Although they aren’t as customizable as smartphones, customers can send emails, instant messages, texts and music to their phones with limited capabilities. Data plans are not required to access these features, but features may incur charges for individual use. Cameras on feature phones are limited to 1.3 megapixels. Most feature phones are flip models, but there are also touch models available like the LG Cosmos.
BlackBerry Phones
BlackBerry phones, another Verizon prepaid phone option, have smartphone features in a compact, stylish shape. BlackBerry phones come with either full QWERTY keyboards or touch screen keyboards, making emails and text messages easier to type. Models like BlackBerry Curve have Skype Mobile capabilities. The BlackBerry Storm boasts a 3.2 megapixel camera. All BlackBerry prepaid phones require a data plan for full operation.
