Custom ringtones add personality to your cellular phone and help differentiate whose phone is ringing in a crowded environment. Most cellular phones include a number of preset ringtone presets for you to choose from to add character to your phone. However, to truly personalize your phone, you can create a custom ringtone with software on your computer. Select your favorite song from your music collection, edit it with ringtone creation software and transfer it to your phone.
Step 1
Download Audacity (see "Resources"). Audacity is a freeware program that can create compressed audio files compatible with most cellular phone brands. It supports music files in FLAC, MP3, Ogg Vorbis and WAV format. Press "File" and "Open" to select the song you want to edit. You can use the program's graphical audio editor to visually select which sections of the song you want to turn into a ringtone. Click "Volume" to adjust the volume level of the file. Press the "Effects" button to apply effects such as bass boost, delay, noise removal and reverb to the song. Use the software included with your cellular phone to transfer the finished ringtone to your phone.
Step 2
Install Ringtone Media Studio (see "Resources"). This program converts the most common compressed audio formats to ringtones, including MP3, AAC, 3GP, WAV and WMA. The ringtones it generates are compatible with phones offered by AT&T, Cingular, T-Mobile, Verizon and other major cellular service providers. Click "File" and then "Open" to select the audio file you want to edit. Use the program's graphical audio editor and cut and paste tools to select the section of the song you want to convert to a ringtone. Press the "Effects" button to add delay, reverb and other effects to the file. Click "Mix" to adjust the volume of the track. Click "Transfer to Phone" to send the ringtone to your cellular phone. Avanquest offers a free trial version of Ringtone Media Studio.
Step 3
Download The Ringtone Maker (see "Resources"). This program is compatible with AAC, MP3, MP4, OGG and WMA files. You can use it to convert your favorite songs to ringtones up to 60 seconds long. The Ringtone Maker generates ringtones compatible with Nokia, Samsung, Motorola and other cellular phone brands. Press "File" and then "Open" to select the song you want to edit. Use the program's cut and paste tools to isolate the section of the song you want to convert into a ringtone. The "Fade In" and "Fade Out" functions let you fade the ringtone in or out. Click "Send to Phone" to transfer the ringtone to your cellular phone. You can download a free trial of the The Ringtone Maker.
