You can open an iPod hard drive in just a few minutes. This might be necessary if, for instance, you'd like to transfer files from your iPod to your computer. It's also a way to delete files from your iPod without using iTunes. Be careful when opening the iPod hard drive: One wrong click could inadvertently delete a file.

Step 1

Connect your iPod to your computer using a USB cable.

Step 2

Click the "Start" button, found in the bottom-left corner of your computer's screen.

Step 3

Select "My Computer" and locate your iPod in the device list. It'll often be the device with "iPod" in the name, such as "Tim's iPod." Double-click the device name.

Step 4

Click the "Tools" menu and select "Folder Options." Choose the "View" tab and select the circle next to "Show hidden files and folders." Click "Apply" and then "OK." A folder named "iPod_Control" will now appear.

Step 5

Double-click the "iPod_Control" folder. You are now looking at your iPod's hard drive. Your music files are located in the "Music" folder, spread out among subfolders with names such as "F00."
