Each iPod has a limited amount of storage space for music and other files, and it may occasionally become necessary to take music off an iPod while keeping the songs in the iTunes library that the iPod syncs with. By changing the iTunes settings to allow you to manually manage your music, selecting the songs you wish to keep on the iPod, and then syncing the iPod, you can easily remove unwanted music to free up space and keep your iPod organized.

Step 1

Connect your iPod to your computer and launch iTunes.

Step 2

Click on your iPod in the device list on the left side of the screen.

Step 3

Check "Manually manage music and videos" and click "Apply."

Step 4

Click the arrow next to your iPod to expand the list and click "Music."

Step 5

Right-click the songs you want to take off your iPod and click "Delete."

Warning

  • When manually managing the music on your iPod, be sure to click the eject button next to your iPod's name before disconnecting your iPod from your computer.
