iTunes is a digital media player application produced by Apple, the manufacturer of Macintosh computers, the iPod, iPhone and iPad. It is available for both Windows and Macintosh computers and is a free package. The software iTunes should not be confused with Apple's digital media store, named the iTunes Store.

Step 1

One benefit of using iTunes as your default digital music player is that the program does the heavy lifting as far as keeping your digital music files organized. Another benefit is that your digital music files are cross-platform, so song files can be transferred from PC to Mac (and vice versa) and be played without having to undergo any type of file translation process.

Step 2

Open the preferences in iTunes by clicking "Edit," then "Preferences." Select "Advanced" to reveal where the music files are stored on your PC. The default location for iTunes files (known as your iTunes Library) on a Windows machine is in the Music folder within the User directory.

Step 3

Once you've determined the location of your iTunes files, you have a couple of options for transfering them to the Mac. Smaller libraries (under 1,000 songs, for example) can simply be copied to a Windows-formatted external hard drive or flash drive and then disconnected and physically attached to your Mac. Libraries that contain TV shows and movies are large and will take longer to transfer.

Step 4

If your music library is large or if you're able to network your computers, you can transfer your iTunes files directly into your Mac from a networked PC. See Resources below for links on networking your Mac and PC.

Step 5

Select "Add To Library" (Command-O) from under the "File" menu in iTunes. Navigate to the source folder (either an attached drive or a networked directory) and select the entire "iTunes Music" folder. This will import all the music files into your Mac.

Tip

  • Each user on the PC may have his individual iTunes music library, so don't forget to check this.

Warning

  • Failing to deauthorize your PC from your iTunes account may prevent you from being able to play music purchased from the iTunes Store on your Mac.
