Motorola Phone Tools for Moto Q

by Alexander Poirier

The Moto Q is a smart phone released by Motorola that runs on Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system. Despite its name and manufacturer, however, the Moto Q does not use the Motorola Phone Tools to sync its contacts, calendars and tasks with a computer. Because the phone runs on the Windows Mobile operating system, it instead uses Microsoft's ActiveSync syncing utility.

Moto Q Overview

On top of the multimedia features offered by the Moto Q, the device also features a number of robust productivity options. Users can create a to-do list of tasks on their phone, manage calendar events and add, edit and remove address book contacts from the the palm of their hand. What's more, users can sync these contacts, calendars and tasks with the calendar, contacts and tasks stored on their computer but to do so they must have a desktop to phone syncing application that is compatible with the Moto Q.

Motorola Phone Tools Overview/Compatibility

Motorola Phone Tools is a desktop syncing application designed for use with Motorola phones that run the native Motorola phone operating system. The application allows users to sync the calendars, contacts and tasks stored on their computer with their phone and vice versa. Despite being a Motorola phone, the Moto Q is not compatible with Motorola Phone Tools because it runs off of Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system. Luckily, however, there is an alternative option for Moto Q owners (see next section).

ActiveSync Overview/Compatibility

Microsoft ActiveSync is a desktop syncing program that is designed for use with phones that run off of Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system. ActiveSync allows Windows Mobile phone users to sync their desktop Microsoft Outlook account with their phone, including its contacts, calendars and tasks, essentially allowing its users to take their desktop network on the go with them. Because the Moto Q runs on Microsoft's Windows Mobile OS, it is natively compatible with ActiveSync.

Using ActiveSync

Tap the "Start" button on the Moto Q and select the "ActiveSync" icon. Select the "Set Up Your Device to Sync With It" option, input the address of your mail server in the space provided and click the "Next" button. Type your username, password and domain in the spaces provided and click the "Next" button. Place a check mark next to the data you want to synchronize and tap the "Finish" button. The device will now sync with your Microsoft Outlook account.
