The LG Dare cell phone gives users an alert and allows them to see new text messages as soon as they are received by the phone. The touch-screen phone sold by Verizon Wireless can store up to 500 text messages at a time, which should be plenty of room for a user to monitor a text message conversation as it's happening. To reply, hold the phone either vertically or horizontally and a virtual QWERTY keyboard will appear.

Step 1

Set an alert sound for incoming text messages using the "Settings & Tools" icon, which looks like a gear.

Step 2

Choose "Sound Settings," then "Alert Sounds." Look for "TXT."

Step 3

Choose a unique sound for your text messages from the options displayed or opt to have the phone vibrate when a new message is received.

Step 4

Wait for a text message to arrive. You will hear the alert you chose, plus the "Message" icon, which looks like an envelop will appear on the screen.

Step 5

Touch the icon to see your messages.
