ITunes is a free program that allows you to manage your iPod. You can update content such as songs, videos, and photos through iTunes. There are, however, two ways to put songs on your iPod using iTunes. The first, which is set by default, is automatically syncing songs from your computer to your iPod. This method doesn't allow you to pick and choose the songs you want to put on your iPod. Instead, it merely imports the entire library of songs. The second method allows you to manually add and remove songs from your iPod.

Step 1

Connect your iPod to your computer using the iPod USB cable. The computer must be on.

Step 2

Open the iTunes application if it does not automatically open. An icon of your iPod appears in the left column of iTunes under "Devices."

Step 3

Click your iPod icon to view the contents of the iPod.

Step 4

Change your iPod's update setting to manual by clicking the "Summary" tab at the top of iTunes. Click the check box next to "Manually manage music and videos." Click "Apply" at the bottom of the screen and the setting is saved.

Step 5

Open your iTunes music library by clicking "Library" at the top of the left pane.

Step 6

Find and select the songs you want to add from your library. Once you've found them, drag them onto the icon of your iPod. These are manually added to your iPod.
