Creating an iTunes account allows you to purchase from the wide selection of music and videos available in the iTunes store. Because you purchase these items through your iTunes account, you must provide payment information when creating the account. This might seem like an insurmountable hurdle if you do not have -- or do not wish to use -- a credit card. Fortunately, you have an alternative; iTunes also accepts PayPal as a payment method.

Step 1

Open iTunes and click on the "Store" option at the top. From the drop-down list that appears, click on the option to "Create Account." This will open a new page welcoming you to the iTunes store. Click "Continue."

Step 2

Click the box saying you agree to the terms and conditions and privacy policy, then click "Continue." This will take you to a page where you need to provide an email address, a password, a question and an answer in case you forget your password, your date and year of birth, and whether you wish to receive certain emails. Provide this information, then click "Continue" to open the "Provide a Payment Method" page.

Step 3

Click the PayPal option in the list of available payment methods. This option, which is the last one on the list, is the only way to open an iTunes account without providing a credit card number. Click "Continue." This will open a browser window where you will be able to log into your PayPal account. Enter your PayPal email address and password, then click "Log In."

Step 4

Click "Agree and Continue" in the page asking if you wish to add PayPal as a payment method for the iTunes store. PayPal will then announce that you have successfully created a billing agreement. Click the orange "Continue to iTunes Store" button. This will take you back to iTunes, where you must now enter your full name, billing address and phone number. Do so, then click "Continue." This will send a validation email to the address you provided earlier (not the PayPal email address).

Step 5

Check the email address you provided when creating your iTunes account. You should have an email from Apple asking you to verify your email address. Click the "Verify Now" link in this email. This will open a Web page where you must sign in with the email address and password you supplied at the beginning of creating your iTunes account. Click the "Verify Address" button once you have entered these, then click the "Return to the Store" button. This will take you back to iTunes, where you are now logged in with your new account. Click "Done" in iTunes to begin browsing the store.
