The computer registry on your Windows-based computer stores all the information relating to the programs and hardware installed on your computer. It also usually contains information from older programs and hardware your computer no longer uses. This backup of files can slow down the registry and slow down the computer, most noticeably during the start-up process. In order to make your registry faster, you need to clean it of old files.
Step 1
Launch the registry cleaning software you have on your computer. If you do not currently have such a program, you can download a free registry cleaning program from CNET.com. Simply navigate to the site, select "Downloads," click "Windows" and type "Registry" in the top bar. This brings up all the registry programs. The top-rated programs are listed at the top of the list. Some of the best-rated free programs are "Advanced Registry Optimizer," "Wise Registry Cleaner" and "Auslogics Registry Defrag." Download the program and double-click the downloaded file to open the installation wizard. Follow the prompts to install the software.
Step 2
Select a "Full Registry Scan." This scans your entire registry for files to programs and software you no longer have installed on the computer, and for duplicate files.
Step 3
Select all the found files after the scan is complete (click the "Select All" tab).

Click "Remove" and all of the unnecessary files are removed from your computer's registry. The next time you boot the system, you will notice a difference in boot speed.
