Apple's iPod and iPhone are ubiquitous devices, ranking among the most widely used portable devices for audio and video. As the video and resolution capabilities increase on these devices, so does the desire to connect them to your television. A variety of cables are available to accommodate the Apple devices, mating them appropriately with the television type in your home.

Composite

Composite audio/video cables, identified by their familiar red, white and yellow cables, are compatible with virtually all televisions. Using a dock cable at one end and the three interconnected RCA cables at the other, this cable is compatible with the iPod, iPhone and iPad. This cable also includes a USB connector for convenient charging with a computer or television equipped with a USB port.

Component

Component video uses red, green and blue connectors to facilitate high-definition resolutions on your compatible flat-screen TV. These cables also use a dock connector and red and white audio cables to round out the connections. Like all other dock-style A/V cables, the component cable includes USB.

3.5mm Audio

For televisions equipped with headphone-style 3.5mm jacks, a corresponding cable is also available. Connecting to the headphone jack on the Apple device, the output is regulated from the device's volume control, unlike when a dock connector is used. Although video is not incorporated into it, the 3.5mm jack can be used with a separate video cable, or simply used to pipe audio into a television.

Digital A/V Adapter

This unique audio/video cable allows your iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPod Touch to connect to a TV using the familiar dock connector. Also compatible with iPads, this cable allows for a simultaneous High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) connection and charging. This cable is tailor-made for the high resolutions offered by these devices, allowing display of the portable device's content onto a flat-screen TV.

Apple VGA Adapter

The 15-pin VGA adapter is compatible with any monitor or television equipped with a VGA connection. This small pigtail-style cable clicks into the dock connector output of an iPhone 4 or fourth-generation iPod Touch. The adapter cable also works with the iPad. Enabling 1080p video output from compatible devices, the VGA adapter allows mirroring of video from the iPad.
