Hewlett-Packard is a well-known technology company that produces computers and computer-related products such as printers. HP printers are compatible with most other brands of computer systems, including Dell, as long as the computer's printer port is compatible. New HP printers use a USB cable, which is compatible with most newer Dell computers. If installing an older HP printer with a printer serial plug cable to your Dell computer, you may not have a port that will accept that type of cable. As long as this is not the case, installing an HP printer with a Dell computer requires the same installation steps as any other compatible system.

Step 1

Power on your Dell computer.

Step 2

Insert the HP installation disk into your Dell computer's CD or DVD-ROM drive. If you no longer have the installation disk, you can power your HP printer on and allow your computer to locate the necessary drivers online, or go to the HP and select "Support & Drivers." Press the "Start Detection" button to automatically detect your HP printer and find the necessary drivers and software. Alternatively, you can enter in your HP printer model into the "For Product" field and then press "Go" to find the correct software and drivers.

Step 3

Follow the installation prompts to install your new HP printer software and drivers. The installation prompts will tell you if you should unplug your printer and when to plug it back up to your computer.

Step 4

Print a test page to verify that the HP printer is connected correctly. If you are unable to print a test page, go to the Control Panel in your Start menu. Select "Printers and Other Hardware." Look to see if the HP printer is "Online." If the printer is "Offline" make sure it is plugged up correctly to your Dell computer, or go through the installation process again to help troubleshoot the problem. You may also need to call HP customer support at 800-474-6836, which is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
