In order to upload songs to your portable MP3 player, you need to install hardware onto your computer. This hardware is in the form of a USB data cable and comes with the MP3 player when you purchase it. Often the MP3 player also comes with software used to upload the music. This software can range from Apple iTunes to Microsoft's Zune upload program.

Step 1

Insert the USB data cable into one of the available USB ports on your computer. You can leave this permanently connected if you choose or you can insert the cable into the USB port whenever you decide to sync the MP3 player with your computer system.

Step 2

Plug the other end of the USB cable into the USB port on the MP3 player. This completes the hardware installation for the MP3 player connection.

Step 3

Insert the software installation CD into the computer. When the installation wizard appears on the screen, follow the brief set of prompts to install the program. Once installed, the program will detect the connected MP3 player.

Step 4

Type in a name for the MP3 player (if asked), then type in the product code number listed on the back of the device (if asked). Click "OK" to complete the setup and you are now ready to begin placing songs on the MP3 player.
