Broadband Internet is fast but can always stand to be faster. While it's light years ahead of DSL and 56K (yes, people still use 56K), cable Internet can still be faster. There are a few things you as a user can do to improve your own personal Internet speeds, though there is nothing you can do to the hardware itself to increase the Internet speeds. After all, that is all controlled by your Internet service provider.
Step 1
Consider the time of day you surf the Internet. Peak Internet hours are usually around the early evening (between 6 and 10 p.m.). Using the Internet in the early morning or late at night will result in a faster connection.
Step 2
Use a third-party program such as EasyMTU, I-Speed or Intelli Dial-Up to optimize your cable connection. While there isn't really anything that can be done to increase the raw output of data, your Internet connection can be made somewhat faster by optimizing the connection in regard to which ports data is sent to and from.
Step 3
Defragment your computer. If your computer is running slowly, this will have an effect on the performance of your Internet connection. Make sure your computer is regularly maintained and your Internet will stay fast.
