Knowing the exact model of your Compaq Presario laptop or desktop PC is important when downloading updated software or drivers or when seeking technical support. There are various ways to ascertain the correct model number for your system.
Label
Most Compaq Presario computers have an identification label attached, containing the machine's serial number and model number. The location of this label varies between different models.
If you have a Presario desktop, look for the label on the top, back and side of the computer case. If you have an older Presario desktop with a built-in CD storage container, look underneath the container cover for the identification label.
Presario laptop identification labels are usually on the base of the laptop, sometimes below the battery.
Desktop System Information
Various software tools from HP/Compaq can reveal your model number. It is likely than one or more of these is already installed on your computer.
Using a keyboard combination of "Ctrl-Alt-S" on a Presario desktop produced between 2000 and 2010 should cause a system information window to appear after a brief delay. The computer's model number is included in the information provided.
HP Support Assistant
Newer Presario desktops and laptops are preloaded with HP Support Assistant software. This software displays the computer's model number on its initial home screen. Access the Support Assistant from the "HP" section of the Microsoft Windows "Start" menu.
HP Support Assistant can be downloaded free of charge from the HP website if required and is compatible with Windows Vista and Windows 7.
Support
The support area of the HP/Compaq website requires you to have the relevant model details for your machine if you wish to seek technical assistance or download updated software and drivers. When locating the label or using one of the software tools, the details you need are described as either a "model number" or "product number," depending on the computer you have. Either of these numbers will allow you to find the information or software you need.
