Use a BlackBerry as a tethered modem to connect your laptop to the Internet. Several BlackBerry smart-phone models feature this capability, including the Bold, Curve, Pearl, Storm, Style, Torch and Tour. The Internet connection will be slower than a usual Wi-Fi connection, but you will have Internet access. Before connecting a BlackBerry to the laptop, locate and write down the laptop's IP address and your Internet APN. Do not use the BlackBerry while establishing the Internet connection, since the data may interfere.
Step 1
Install BlackBerry Desktop Software (see "Resources"). This software contains drivers that assist in communication between the BlackBerry and the laptop's virtual COM port.
Step 2
Click "Start" on your computer home screen. Click "Settings" and select "Control Panel." Click twice on the "Phone and Modem Options."
Step 3
Click the "Modems" tab in the "Phone and Modem Options" window. Click "Standard Modem" and choose "Properties." Click the "Advanced" tab in the "Standard Modem Properties" window.
Step 4
Type "+cgdcont=1" followed by first the computer IP address and then the Internet APN in the "Extra initialization commands" field. Click "OK" to save, then select "OK" to close the "Phone and Modem Options" window.
Step 5
Click "Start" on the computer home screen and choose "Settings." Click "Network Connections," then select "New Connection Wizard." The wizard opens.
Step 6
Click "Connect to the Internet" and choose "Next." Click "Set up my connection manually" and choose "Next." Click "Connect using a dial-up modem" and choose "Next." Click "Modem - Standard Modem" in the "Select a Device" screen, then click "Next."
Step 7
Type the connection name in the "ISP Name" box, and type "*99#" in the "Phone number" box. Click "Next." Type your username and password, then click "Finish."
Step 8
Click "Properties" in the "Connect" window and choose "Configure." Uncheck the "Enable hardware flow control" box. No other boxes should be checked. Click "OK" and choose "OK" in the "Properties" window.
Step 9
Connect your BlackBerry to your computer either through Bluetooth or the USB cable. Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager and a message appears reading "Connected."
Step 10
Open "Network Connections" on the computer and click on the "Connection Name" that you named. Type the username and password you previously entered, then click "Dial."
