How to Grant Remote Computer Management

by Bonnie Conrad

If you are having trouble with your computer, you could try to explain what you see to the technician, or you could let that technician see exactly what you see by granting remote access to your computer. When you grant remote access the technician who helps you will see exactly what is happening on your computer.

Step 1

Log on to your computer and right-click on "Computer." Choose "Properties" from the menu.

Step 2

Click "Remote settings" in the left side of the window and select on of the remote options, then click "Add" to add user permissions. In Windows XP select the "Remote" tab and check both of the check boxes.

Step 3

Click on the "Start" menu and type "cmd" in the "Search" box, then press "Enter." In Windows XP choose "Run" from the "Start" menu. Type "cmd" in the box and click "OK." Type "ipconfig" at the prompt and record the IP address of your computer.

Step 4

Give the IP address and login information to the computer technician. He or she will use this information to connect remotely to your computer and make any necessary repairs or adjustments.
