While comic books were once available only in paper form, publishers have begun offering digital versions of comic books. A number of files are associated with comic books, including some that use the CBR file extension.

Identification

A file with the CBR file extension is known as a Comic Book RAR archive.

Function

A file with the CBR file extension contains a digital comic book. The CBR file extension serves as a marker to your computer, signaling that the file requires a compatible comic viewer in order to be accessible.

Features

The comic book saved in the CBR file enables users to view the pages of the comic book two at a time, similar to a printed comic book. The CBR file is compressed or made smaller to take up less space on your computer.

Sources

CBR files are available from a number of websites that distribute comic books.

Programs

On Mac OS X computers, CBR files are accessible with Feedface FFView, while Microsoft computers often use CDisplay to access CBR files. Linux computers typically use Comix as the viewer for CBR files.
