VersaMail is Palm's full-feature email program available to owners of the Palm Treo 650 or 700p Smartphone, as well as the Palm T|X handheld and Palm LifeDrive mobile manager. While email functionality is not hard to establish on these devices, enabling secure socket layers (SSL) can be tricky because this is an advanced setting within the account configuration option. If you are using Palm's VersaMail to access corporate email, verify the SSL ports with your IT department or network administrator prior to enabling SSL.
Step 1
Open VersaMail on your Palm device.
Step 2
Tap the "Menu" button, using the device's stylus. A drop-down menu appears.
Step 3
Tap "Accounts/Account Setup." Tap your email account. If this is your first time establishing an email account, view the Treo 700p Handbook link in the Resources section for detailed information on how to setup email accounts in VersaMail.
Step 4
Tap "Edit" under the options for you email account.
Step 5
Tap "Next" two times and bypass the account username and password settings. This will take you directly to the settings pertaining to your incoming and outgoing mail servers.
Step 6
Tap the box containing the name of the "Incoming Mail Server." Input the name of your ISP's or company's secure incoming mail server. Repeat the process in the outgoing mail server box. When complete, tap "Next."
Step 7
Tap "Advanced" in the next window. Under "Incoming Server Settings", check "Use Secure Connection (SSL)". The port number, located above the check box, will change to "995." If you're using POP, this is standard. If you're using IMAP, change it to "993." Again, verify the appropriate server and port settings with your network administrator or ISP; however, these are usually standard.
Step 8
Check "Use Secure Connection (SSL) and "Use Authentication (ESMTP) in the "Outgoing Server Settings," if your mail network supports SSL on outgoing messages. The port number, located above the check box, will change to "465." This is standard for SSL connections, but check with your ISP or network administrator. Verify your username and password information is correct. Tap "Done."
Step 9
Tap "Yes" when asked if you would like to overwrite your existing account settings. Your SSL server settings are enabled on your device. Tap "OK" to close the account settings window.
Tip
- Obtain your incoming and outgoing mail server settings from your email account provider. This information can be obtained via the email provider's website, your Internet service provider, or through your company's network administrator. You will need secure server (POP or IMAP) and port information prior to setting up VersaMail.
Warning
- Several email providers and ISPs do not provide SSL support. Therefore, always verify SSL is supported prior to enabling on your device. If SSL is not supported, enabling it will prevent communication with your email provider.
