by Lindsay Howell

The Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) is commonly used for playing games, but the system can also play movie files that are encoded in a special version of the ".MP4" codec. Many programs are available that will convert the file for you. They are not free, but they will not break your bank either.

Step 1

Download Intertech DVD to PSP Converter. As of January 2011, it costs $29.90 (see "References" for download link). Place the DVD into the computer after installing the program. Open the converter and click the "Open DVD" button. Choose the "MP4 (PSP)" video output option. Click the "Browse" button to save the file to your computer. Click "Main Movie" and then "Convert." The file will be converted into a .MP4 file. Insert the PSP's computer connection cable into the PSP and the other end into the computer's USB port. Open the PSP's folder when the new drive screen appears. Drag the movie located on your computer into the PSP folder.

Step 2

Convert DVD movies with Ideal DVD to PSP Converter. As of January 2011, it costs $29.97 (see "References" for link). Open Ideal DVD to PSP Converter and insert the DVD. Insert the PSP's computer connection cable into the PSP and the other end into the computer's USB port. Open the PSP's folder when the new drive screen appears. Drag the movie located on your computer into the PSP folder.

Step 3

Select the "VIDEO TS" folder inside the disc. Click "Start Recording" on the main screen to convert the file. Plug the PSP into the computer. Select the "Transfer to PSP" option to transfer the converted file over.
