Your Garmin GPS comes with an up-to-date map of North America that guides you to almost any urban or rural destination. Cities and states, however, regularly build new roads and make changes to existing streets. If your Garmin has an outdated map, the device gives you inaccurate directions that may cause you to get lost. Garmin typically releases a new map update at least once per year. You can download updates for your maps with the Garmin Communicator plugin.
Step 1
Connect your registered Garmin GPS to the computer with the included USB cable.
Step 2
Open your Web browser, and go to the Garmin myDashboard page (link in Resources). Enter your Garmin username or email address, then type your password and click "Sign In."
Step 3
Click the "MyMaps" tab, and select your Garmin GPS from the drop-down menu. Click "Agree" to accept to the End User License Agreement.
Step 4
Click "Install" and "Launch Download Manager" to begin downloading the Garmin Communicator plugin to the computer. If your browser asks for permission to download the plugin, click the yellow message bar near the top of the window.
Step 5
Click "Install" and "Save" to download the plugin to the desktop. Click "Launch" when the download finishes to extract the plugin.
Step 6
Click "Next" on the Map Update screen. Accept the Software and Data License Agreement, then click "Next." Wait a moment as the map update installs on the Garmin GPS.
Step 7
Click "Finish" at the prompt, then disconnect the Garmin from your computer.
Tip
- You must register your Garmin to update the map. If you haven't registered yet, you can do so on the Garmin website (link in Resources).
