Whether you want to view your favorite iPhone game on a larger screen or want to record a video tutorial on how to use a specific iPhone app, you can use a third-party app to mirror the device’s screen on a computer monitor. Programs such as Reflector and AirServer allow you to stream your iPhone screen to a monitor wirelessly but require the iPhone to be connected to the same wireless network as the PC. If you’re unable to use a Wi-Fi connection, install iTools, which allows you to display the device’s screen on a monitor using a USB cable.

Using iTools

Step 1

Download and install the iTools freeware application on your PC (link in Resources). Launch the program when the installation process completes.

Step 2

Connect the iPhone to the computer using the USB cable. The name of your iPhone appears automatically in the navigation pane.

Step 3

Select “Desktop” in the navigation pane, and then click the “Live Desktop” tab. The iPhone screen displays automatically on the computer monitor.

Using Reflector

Step 1

Download and install the Reflector program on your PC (link in Resources). As of January 2013, the software costs approximately $13. When the installation process completes, open the program. If Windows requests to connect to the program, click the “Allow Access” button.

Step 2

Double-tap the “Home” button on the iPhone to reveal the multitask tray. Swipe to the right on the multitask tray, and then tap the circular “AirPlay” icon located to the right of the volume slider.

Step 3

Select your PC in the AirPlay menu, and then switch the Mirroring toggle to the “On” setting. The iPhone screen appears automatically on the PC monitor.

Using AirServer

Step 1

Download and install AirServer on your computer (link in Resources). As of January 2013, software licenses range from $4 to $15. Launch the program when the installation process completes.

Step 2

Double-tap the “Home” button on the iPhone and select “AirPlay” in the multitask tray at the bottom of the screen.

Step 3

Tap the name of your computer in the AirPlay menu and then toggle the Mirroring option to “On.” The iPhone screen displays on the computer monitor automatically.

Warning

  • Many mirroring applications for the iPhone are compatible only with 3GS models and later. If you experience trouble projecting the phone's screen on the computer monitor, confirm the hardware specifications for the application you downloaded.
