Sometimes users will transfer a picture to the PC using BlackBerry Desktop Software using a cut and paste procedure, but return to the device to find that a thumbnail of the picture remains. The user tries to erase the picture again, but there are none to delete. Media files, such as pictures, songs and videos must be deleted locally on the device. Media deleted otherwise will not be marked for delete at the next synchronization with the Desktop Software. To permanently delete thumbnails, users must delete a file called "BBThumbs.dat" that is created by the BlackBerry Media Player.

Step 1

Connect the BlackBerry device to the PC. Using Desktop Manager, copy the pictures on the device to the PC.

Step 2

Disconnect the BlackBerry device from the PC. Open the media folder. Highlight the "Pictures" icon and click on the "Application" button to access the settings. Select "Explore."

Step 3

Locate the folder that contains the picture, which should be located in the "/Device Memory/home/users/pictures" folder. Highlight the thumbnail.

Step 4

Click on the "Application" button and select "Properties." Place a check next to "Hidden" and click on "Close." This should bring up "BBthumbs.dat," the legacy thumbnails file.

Step 5

Select "BBthumbs.dat" and click on the "Application" button. Select "Delete." Reboot the device, which should rebuild "BBthumbs.dat" and eliminate the thumbnail image.
