Modify AVG antivirus to keep paperclip icons off your email.

When the AVG virus scanner is installed on a computer running Outlook Express, its default behavior is to add a small file to each message indicating that the message was scanned for viruses and it is clean. A side effect of this feature is that each message will display a paper clip icon next to the title, indicating that the message has an attachment when it does not. Change your settings in AVG to prevent it from adding attachments to your messages automatically.
