Your Dish Network DVR has a limited storage space. Once the storage limit is reached, to make room for new recordings old recordings must be erased. If you want to permanently preserve a recording saved on your Dish DVR, you must copy the DVR recording to an alternate video storage media such as a VHS tape or DVD disc. Do this by hooking up a VCR or DVD recorder to the Dish DVR. The VCR or DVD recorder is then used to dub videos from the DVR.
Connect Dish DVR to a VCR or DVD Recorder
Check that the coaxial cable connected to the cable wall outlet, installed by the Dish Network technician, is connected to the RF "Satellite" In port on the back of the Dish DVR.
Plug one end of a red AV cable into the DVR's red "Audio R" AV output jack. Plug one end of a white AV cable into the DVR's white "Audio L" AV output jack. Plug one end of a yellow AV cable into the DVR's yellow "Video" AV output jack. Connect the other end of each AV cable to the color corresponding AV input jack on the back of the VCR or DVD recording device.
Use the remaining set of AV cables to connect the recording device's AV output jacks to its color corresponding AV input jack on the TV set.
Turn on the TV, Dish DVR and the VCR or DVD recording device.
Continuously press the "Input" button on the TV's remote control until the TV's video input channel is set to the AV source. Use the "Input" or "Source" button on the VCR or DVD recorder's remote control to set the device's video input channel to AV.
Dub Video from Dish DVR to VHS Tape or DVD Disc
Insert a blank VHS tape into the VCR, or load a blank DVD-R disc into the DVD recorder.
Use the "Speed" or "Mode" button on the VCR or DVD remote control to set your preferred recording speed.
Press the "DVR" button on the Dish Network remote control. Select "My Recordings" from the DVR menu. Use the remote's arrow buttons to scroll through the list of DVR recorded shows. Highlight the show you want to copy. Press "Select" on the remote.
Select "Start" from the DVR menu to start playback of the show. Push "Record" on the VCR or DVD recorder to begin dubbing the show to tape or disc.
Push "Stop" on the VCR or DVD recorder to end the recording. If you are recording to a DVD disc and you do not wish to record any more material onto the current disc, open the DVD recorder's Main or General Setup menu. Find and select the "Finalize" disc menu option.
- To transfer a copy-protected video from a Dish DVR to a DVD disc using a DVD recorder, the DVD recorder must be HDCP compatible. Once the video is copied to the DVD disc, it is no longer available on the Dish DVR. You will also not be able to make further copies of the DVD disc. Check your DVD recorder's specifications to see if the device is HDCP compatible.
