Apple created the iPod portable media player to let users enjoy their music while on the go. The iPod's contents are managed by the iTunes music software. The software makes managing your music simple by giving you optional ways to categorize and group your songs, such as playlists. After creating a playlist, copy it onto your iPod so you can take it with you.

Step 1

Open iTunes. Find the software in the Start menu of your Windows PC, or in the Applications folder on your Mac.

Step 2

Click "File" in the top menu bar and select "New Playlist" from the drop-down menu. A new playlist will appear in the left column of iTunes. You can double-click the playlist title to give it a custom name if you wish.

Step 3

Click "Music" to display your main iTunes library, if you're not already viewing it.

Step 4

Select a song that you want to add to the playlist. Click the song and don't release your mouse's click button. Drag the song to the playlist and release your mouse's button to drop the song into the playlist. Repeat until all the songs you want are in the playlist.

Step 5

Connect your iPod to your computer using its included USB syncing cable. The wide and thin plug gets inserted into the bottom of the iPod device. The opposite end gets inserted into any available USB port on your computer. Once connected, the iPod will show up as a symbol in the left column of iTunes.

Step 6

Click the playlist that you just created. Drag it up to the iPod icon and release it. The iTunes software will automatically transfer the playlist to the iPod.

Step 7

Push the eject symbol next to the iPod's icon once the syncing process is complete.

Tip

  • Make your playlist as big or small as you want, but remember that all iPods have a capacity limit. IPods range in capacity and can hold a varying amount of songs. This will limit the ultimate size of your playlist.
