Windows XP uses icons to act as small visual representations of programs, files and folders within the operating system. Icons can be selected, opened, dragged, dropped and copied. When these types of actions are performed on icons, they can affect the programs, files and folders that the icons represent.
Step 1
Select an icon on your computer (such as on the Desktop) by left-clicking it with your cursor a single time.
Step 2
Right-click the icon and select the "Copy" option.
Step 3
Right-click an empty portion of your computer Desktop (or an empty portion within a Windows Explorer window) and select the "Paste" option. The icon is copied from its original location to the second location that you specified.
