The MPEG-4 or MP4 file type, used for both audio and videos, is a creation of the productive Moving Picture Experts Group. MP4 files are often used for online file sharing and file downloads. While some devices and applications understand the MP4 format, it's not nearly as used as the ubiquitous MP3 music file format. MP3s are highly compressed audio files that typically contain near-CD quality sound. Free online tools can perform MP4 to MP3 conversions.
