The MPEG Audio Layer III music format, more commonly referred to as the MP3, is the most widely known music format. Its name has entered the lexicon as part of the term "MP3 Player" and is synonymous with all online music. While MP3s work well with most programs, they aren't entirely versatile, particularly in relation to audio editing. In many instances, the WAV or WAVE audio format is preferable. MP3 to WAV conversion can be completed for free using online tools on both Macs and PCs.
