How to Convert iTunes Music to Ringtones

by Paul Kemp

iTunes is a one-stop shop for consumers' media needs. Along with music, e-books, movies, television shows and phone applications, iTunes also offers users the ability to convert any of the songs they have purchased from the iTunes store into a ringtone, and even includes a simple editing interface for maximum customization. Your favorite song can be your favorite iPhone ringtone in a matter of just a couple minutes.

Step 1

Open iTunes and select "Purchase" from the "Store" heading of the column on the left side of the application window. These are the files that you can convert to ringtones directly in iTunes.

Step 2

Click on the song you would like to convert to a ringtone. Select "Store > Create Ringtone" from the application menu. This will launch the "Processing" progress bar and eventually open a window at the bottom of the application.

Step 3

Slide the blue tinted 15-second window to the portion of the song you want to use as your ringtone. Check the boxes at each corner of the blue tinted window, depending on whether you want the ringtone to fade in and out. Set a gap measure in the "Looping" dropdown menu at the bottom of the window and click the "Preview" button to hear your ringtone as it is set. Make any adjustments you would like and click "Buy."

Step 4

Enter your iTunes account email in the "Apple ID" field and click "Buy." The ringtone will download and then show up in the "Ringtones" list under the "Library" heading of the left-hand column.

Tip

  • You can create a ringtone out of any of your audio files for free in Apple's Garageband software. Just import and cut the file, and then send it to iTunes.
