AVI files can be viewed on an iPhone after they are converted to the MP4 format.

Audio Video Interleave (AVI) is a video format introduced by Microsoft in the early 1990s. AVI is a common Windows file type associated with Windows Media Player by default. Your iPhone is managed by the iTunes software, so any AVI files you would like to watch on your iPhone first need to converted to a format compatible with iTunes. Once the video has been added to iTunes, it can be synced to your iPhone.
Convert Using Convert AVI to MP4
Step 1
Download Convert AVI to MP4. This is a free software that quickly converts your AVI files to MP4 format. Click the icon and follow the prompts to install the software.
Step 2
Launch the software. Click the "Open" button under "AVI Video" and select the file you want to convert.
Step 3
Click the "Save As" button under "MP4 Video." Select the name and output location for the converted file.
Step 4
Click the "Convert" button to complete the process.
Convert Using Leawo Free AVI to MP4 Converter
Step 1
Download Leawo Free AVI to MP4 Converter. Click the icon and follow the prompts to install the software.
Step 2
Launch the software. Click the "Add Video" icon and select the file you want to convert.
Step 3
Click the drop-down list next to the "Profile" box and select "MPEG-4 AVC Video Format." Click "Open" next to the "Output" box and select the location you want your new file saved to.
Step 4
Click the large button in the lower right corner to complete the conversion.
Convert Using Mac Video Converter
Step 1
Download the software. Click the icon and follow the prompts to complete the installation. As of February 2011, the complete version can be purchased for $35.
Step 2
Launch the software. click the "Add Files" button and select the AVI file you want to convert.
Step 3
Choose "iPod Video MPEG-4" from the "Format" box. Click the "Convert" button to complete the file conversion.
Add the Converted File to Your iPhone
Step 1
Import your movie into iTunes. Go to "File > Add File to Library." When the dialog window opens, navigate to the folder that holds your MP4 file. Highlight the file by clicking on it once, then click "Open." This will add the new video to your iTunes library. You can view the video in iTunes by clicking on "Movies" in the left menu pane.
Step 2
Sync your iPhone. Connect your iPhone to your computer. Click your device in the left pane, then click on the "Movies" tab. Select the videos you want to add to you iPhone, then click the "Apply" button.
Step 3
Disconnect your iPhone. Your AVI video has now been converted and is ready to watch.
