The iPhone comes pre-installed with a Contacts application that stores phone numbers, email addresses and home addresses for all of your contacts. By default, when you open the Contacts application, your contacts are arranged in alphabetical order by their first names. Searching for a specific contact on the iPhone is a simple task and takes just moments to complete.

Step 1

Open the Contacts application by clicking its icon from your phone's home screen.

Step 2

Use your finger to scroll through the contact list by pressing it on the screen and making a downward sweeping motion. Move your finger faster to scroll quickly or move your finger slowly to view only a few contacts at a time.

Step 3

Click the search box at the top of the screen to narrow down your search. Enter a first name, last name, or company name in the box. As you type, contacts in your list that match what you are typing appear below the search box.

Step 4

Touch the letter on the right-hand side of the screen to go directly to a list of all contacts whose names begin with a that letter.

Tip

  • To change the way names are displayed in your contact list when you search for them, select "Settings," then "Mail, Contacts, Calendars." In the "Sort Order" and "Display Order" fields, choose between "First, Last" or "Last, First," depending on your preferences.
  • IPhones with software version 3.0 or greater installed can also search for contacts by opening the "Spotlight" feature and typing a contact's first or last name into the search box.
