Microsoft offers a variety of software and platforms to enable you to receive and access your email. Windows Live Mail and Windows Live Hotmail are free email applications that are available for use on your computer and via your browser, respectively. You can adjust your preferences to create filters that send emails from specific senders to specific folders, or specify how many messages you wish to display on a screen, among other options.
Windows Live Mail 2011
Step 1
Launch Windows Live Mail on your computer from the desktop or Start menu.
Step 2
Click the button in the top left-hand corner to give you access to the File and other menus. Select Options and choose Mail to edit your email preferences.
Step 3
Click a tab within the Options screen to edit settings that fall under this heading. For example, you can place a check mark next to the option to play sounds when there is a new incoming message. On the General tab you can, for instance, type in a number of minutes to tell the program how often to check for mail (the default value is 10). Other tabs allow you to specify emoticon and font preferences and enable the spell checker.
Step 4
Click "Apply" to apply any changes you have made and click "OK" to exit. You will need to click the "Apply" button once again if you make further changes.
Windows Live Hotmail
Step 1
Log into your Hotmail account by accessing http://mail.live.com in your Internet browser.
Step 2
Click the Options drop-down menu in the top right-hand corner and click More Options to load the full settings page.
Step 3
Click one of the links on the Options page to adjust your settings. For example, if you wish to add or edit your email signature, click "Personal email signature"; choose "Safe and blocked senders" to add or remove email addresses on the spammer list.
Step 4
Follow the on-page prompts to change your settings. Many settings allow you to add or remove a check mark to enable or disable these settings. The Signature page presents you with a rich text editor to create a signature that will appear as it does in the editor; you can type in blocked senders if you are editing the safelist.
Step 5
Click the "Save" button, if one exists, to confirm your preference changes.
