When you connect an iPod to a computer for the first time, iTunes asks you to name the device. This name stays with the device until it is altered. Therefore, you could find that if you purchase a used iPod, your computer might call the device "Billy's iPod" when that is not your name. Using the settings available in iTunes, however, you can change the name of an iPod to whatever you like.

Step 1

Open iTunes and connect the iPod to your computer. After the computer detects the iPod, you should see the original device name displayed on the left side of the screen.

Step 2

Double-click the name of the iPod. The name will be highlighted in blue, and a blinking cursor will appear.

Step 3

Press the "Backspace" key to erase the original name of the iPod. Type in the name that you want to use.

Step 4

Press "Enter." The iPod now displays the new name. iTunes also displays the new name when you click the "Summary" tab.

Tip

  • These steps also work for changing the name of an iPad or iPhone.
